Since 2003, the Jazz Award of the City of Worms has been given to outstanding jazz musicians biannually. With a prize money of €5,000 sponsored by Florian Gerster, it is presented to the winners on the BlueNite Jazz Music Days in Worms.
The 2007 Winner
Composer and trombonist Christof Thewes
The third Jazz Award of the City of Worms goes to the composer and trombonist Christof Thewes from the Saar. The jury appreciated Thewes’ ‘exposed trombone playing’ and his ‘expressive affinity towards the avantgarde’.
Sponsored by Florian Gerster, the award is presented biannually during a prize-winner’s concert in November.
The prize is rewarded to young German jazz musicians with professional ambitions—preferentially from Rhineland-Palatinate or bordering länder—for performing outstandingly as a soloist, composer, as an ensemble, or for a project, and to support their musical development.
The prize money is €5,000. Apart from that, the prize winner is invited to play as a performing artist at the next ‘Worms: Jazz & Joy’ festival.
The winner of the award is chosen by a jury of several members. Musicians themselves cannot apply for the award.
The members of the jury are:
Each member of the jury can hand in up to two proposals (groups or soloists), provided with brief credentials / demo recordings. From this selection, the winner is chosen by majority. At a parity of votes, a run-off is held. The decision is taken internally; strict silence is to be maintained to the outside over the nominated candidates.
The prize winner is announced in a press conference prior to the prize winner’s concert. The prize is handed over by the Mayor or a representative of the city, by the sponsor and another member of the jury.
The BlueNite jazz initiative is assigned by the City of Worms with the co-ordination and organization of the Jazz Award, especially with the realization of the prize winner concert.
