Promoting and Propagating Jazz

The idea to launch BlueNite emerged when musicians from Worms sought proactive ways to provide a stage and presentation platform for jazz music in the city. The overwhelming success of the BlueNite project of November 1998, which saw several bands and musicians from Worms performing before an enthused audience, lead to the foundation of the BlueNite association in 1999.

The association’s active members realize and organize jazz events with regionally, but also internationally acclaimed musicians. Regarding themselves as representatives of the regional jazz scene, these members strive to make their honorary cultural work a basis for the promotion and propagation of jazz music in Worms and its vicinity.

Since 2002, the association has been acknowledged as a charitable organization—another appreciation of their unique cultural achievements, which have established BlueNite’s reputation throughout the region.

Summer and Winter BlueNite

The association traditionally stages the ‘Summer BlueNite’ in the summer or early in the autumn in the courtyard of Anhäuser Mühle in Monsheim (co-operation with the district municipality of Monsheim), presenting renowned national and international exponents of jazz music. Throughout the year, BlueNite concerts take place in Worms, since 2008 also in the LincolnTheatre (co-operation with the City of Worms).

Since 2003, the Jazz Award of the City of Worms has been rewarded biannually. BlueNite eV has been assigned by the City of Worms to co-ordinate and organize the presentation and especially to realize the prize winner’s concerts in November.

BlueNite Jazz Session

Every second Thursday of a month, it’s jazz time in ‘Bar & Restaurant Krone’ (Karmeliterstraße 12, Worms). Admission is free. Musicians from Worms—both professionals and amateurs—meet to ride on in jazz standards, joining the BlueNite Session Band in variable settings. Both blue note classics and Real Book standards are part of the programme, and works composed by legends such as Herbie Hancock, Miles Davis or Wayne Shorter are fervently extemporized on by the musicians of the evening.

Four active members of the BlueNite jazz initiative form the core of the Session Band, which is always complemented by guests:

  • Ede Janson (guitar)
  • Oliver Baltz (piano)
  • Sebastian Mettenheimer (saxophone)
  • Volker Wengert (drums)

Everybody is welcome to join the band!

The BlueNite Team

BlueNite founding member Volker Wengert has been the association’s chairman and managing director since 1999. A jazz aficionado by nature, he is, among others, drummer in the BlueNite Jazz Session Band.

Worms saxophone player and BlueNite vice chairman Sebastian Mettenheimer is a walker between the genres of jazz, blues, funk and soul. His sometimes husky notes cannot only be heard in the BlueNite Jazz Session Band, but when the Pherosonics are playing.

Ralf Keidel, a newbie of the board and an enthused amateur jazzman (flute), has been appearing in sessions in Darmstadt and Frankfurt and now also does a lot for jazz life in Worms, his home city.

Also new to the association’s board, Oliver Baltz is quite involved in the jazz life of Worms. His passion for music is a family legacy. He took piano lessons with Wolf Mayer and Lee Brown and guitar lessons with Ede Janson. Stamped by traditional jazz styles such as blues, ragtime and boogie, he came to find his new stylistic home in funk and groove jazz.
