The Abenheim Local History Museum is situated on the upper floor of the old school house. The house’s tradition of teaching is upheld with the museum’s goal of documenting and passing on evidence of the past.
Although only first documented in 774AD, archaeological finds attest that Abenheim can in fact look back on a nearly 6000-year history. It seems there was a settlement as far back as Neolithic times. This can be seen in the many objects on display in the school’s former classrooms: various archaeological finds from the district, bronze objects out of barrows, ceramics for household use, weapons from every possible era and the remains of American machines from the second World War. Tools and household implements also show how former generations lived and worked.
The rest of the school is also long rid of the cane and there exists throughout a museum-like nostalgic air. The former teacher’s apartment beneath the roof has been restored to show how it once would have looked. It is easy to imagine the teacher correcting homework at his desk under the rafters, whilst his wife sat knitting in the sitting room.
For those who prefer more lively times, there is a bar room in the basement where people can swap stories about the good old days.
