The Exhibition

Herrnsheim Castle had been the residence of the Dalbergs, so it seemed obvious that a permanent exhibition should be set up paying tribute to the noble family that influenced so markedly influenced the suburb and the city of Worms. It was clear that main focus should be on the craftmen’s trades.

The exhibition deals with the trades that craftmen had been engaging plying in Herrnsheim in the Dalberg era. There were bakers, coopers, smiths, carpenters, stonemasons and winegrowers. The major part of the exhibition consists of tools, but also of products made with these tools (e.g., barrels).

In addition to the permanent collection and temporary exhibitions, the museums holds ring binders on families from Herrnsheim. Containing old photographs and documents, they are constantly expanded, in part also with the contribution of local museum visitors.

The Building

The museum building, which is some 100 years old, was originally privately owned until in 1934 it was acquired by the Catholic parish. After being rented out and used as a storage room, it was let to Heimatkreis Herrnsheim local heritage society and extensively renovated. The restoration works have made the building itself a gem and, as it were, the largest exhibit of the collection.

The ground floor houses a spacious room, a kitchen and a toilet. In the upper floor with its polished plank flooring, original windows and a puristic interior there are four permanent exhibition rooms. The quaint courtyard behind the house is a nice place for a pleasant get-together, but also for open-air crafting.
