In the Nibelungen museum, visitors can go on a hunt for the legendary treasure of the Nibelungen which is said to be buried under the town. However, this is no treasure made of gold and jewellery, waiting to be discovered is a treasure of stories and memories, of fantasies made into film and longings recorded on tape.
Historians, architects, composers and multimedia specialists from Germany and the surrounding countries have worked on the planning and conception of this modern museum project and added their input. The result is a self-contained production of the Nibelungen legend where seeing, hearing and perceiving are in the forefront. From the entrance area, the path leads first to the video tower, then over the battlements to the audio tower and finally into the treasure room. Here, visitors leave the worldly town of Worms and descend a few metres underground into a virtual myth laboratory.
In the Nibelungen museum, visitors are presented with a new kind of museum which distances itself from traditional museum concepts and introduces a completely new way of conveying the contents of the Nibelungen song and its connected historical references. It is a journey into a past which impresses us as much today as it did our ancestors – and will also attract the attention of generations to come. On their walk through the Nibelungen, visitors are accompanied by the voice of the unknown poet over headphones as he tells of his song and his story (the actor Mario Adorf provides the voice-over).
