A popular destination for school classes, families, educational theory students and history lovers, this is the first school museum in Rhine-Hessian and lies in the suburbs of Pfeddersheim. It has been constructed in the rooms of the Bergschule, an elementary school building which is more than 100 years old - in classrooms where 60 to 70 children once sweated, laughed, sang and put their hands up to answer questions.
It is named after the university lecturer for pedagogy and literature, Professor Dr. Hermann Bertlein. Over years of industrious research, through the junk rooms and attics of many schools, he brought together a whole history of schooling, put it into some kind of order and shaped this into a museum. This museum is his child, carries his name and is also secure in the future through his legacy.
The Pfeddersheim local history museum lent active support to the construction of the museum rooms. From the teacher’s desk to the pictures on the wall and to the cane, from the slate pencil to the ink pot and to the copy-book, visitors to the school museum, which was officially opened on May 20th 1989, can see and experience what was once daily routine for children and teachers.
It is definitely worth a visit!
