Arrangement I - No 6: Making Merry at the Backfischfest
The last weekend in August is a magic date for every local of Worms. It is followed by nine days of hilarious celebrating. During the Backfischfest, the largest wine and fun fair on the Rhine, even the mayor must surrender to the city’s partying inhabitants and—in a colourful traditional ceremony—hand the power over to the
Bojemääschter vun de Fischerwääd, the ‘mayor of the fishermen’s lea’, since it was the fishermen’s guild that established this festival. The name Backfischfest is a pun, denoting both ‘festival of fried fish in batter’ and ‘festival of teenage girls’. The highlights of the Backfischfest are a long procession of floats, marching bands, clubs and societies criss-crossing the inner city, the
Fischerstechen or ‘fishermen’s joust’, in which contestants try to punch each other off their boats on the river Rhine, and the magnificent fireworks at the banks of the river on the last day of the festival. However, the most important thing about the Backfischfest is wine, which you can taste on the
Wonnegauer Weinkeller, a large wine pavilion on the fairground with more than 400 different red and white wines in store for you.
