Hardly has a people produced more legends and stories than the Nibelungs. In the dark Middle Ages, during the Migration Period, they settled on the banks of the Rhine and made Worms their capital. To this day no one knows if all those heroes, knights and villains really existed, but they left impressive marks: a rock which Siegfried is said to have hurled from the Odenwald forest—30 kilometres across the Rhine—to Worms; a font where Hagen is said to have stabbed Siegfried to death; and the monument which shows the famous treasure being dumped in the river. The Nibelungen and Siegfried Route links all historical sites from Würzburg to Worms and is definitely worth a visit.
