Worms has been a melting pot of cultures and confessions long before the Middle Ages. Bishop Burchard laid the foundation stone of one of the most impressive Romanesque churches of Christianity, St Peter’s Cathedral. Luther’s appearance before the Emperor and the representatives of the Holy Roman Empire paved the way for the Reformation, of which the world’s largest Reformation memorial bears witness. But Worms was to stay a multi-confessional city, with four denominations co-existing in the 18th century (Lutherans, Catholics, Calvinists, Jews). To this day, Jews have dubbed Worms ‘Little Jerusalem’, famed for its erudite community, and Europe’s oldest Jewish cemetery, the ‘Holy Sands’. Discover the chequered history of the city of religions and join an entertaining guided tour with one of our certified guides.
