The Wheel of Fortune

The Wheel of Fortune is an exceptional memorial. Much like fortune itself, it keeps changing. While the front shows key events from the city’s history, the back shows scenes from everyday public life.

The Wheel of Fortune

‘If I was born in Worms, I would indulge in history, I would be thirsty for everything the witnesses of stone, the yellowed parchments and the knowing air of this region have to offer. It is not local history I would be dealing with. The air of Germany’s entire history blows above this magnificent place, which has eventually suffered so terribly.

If somebody asks me for a symbol of Germany’s history, I will answer: Worms.’

The locals are well aware that their city has an aura as so enthusiastically testified by Rudolf Krämer-Badoni, and so they have always endeavoured to carefully guard this heritage. For a long time, however, there had not been a depiction giving an overview of the city’s most important historic events.

Today, on historic ground, on the Obermarkt, where fiefs were granted and chivalrous tournaments took place, a bronze wheel revolves, adorned on both sides with figures. It shows the ups and downs of two thousand years of history which in its scope challenges our imagination.

With the disk rotating, the sections of this big kaleidoscope are highlighted one after another. High and flat reliefs take turns in presenting figures and symbols appearing either as eye-catching episodes or as important backdrops.
