“Here I stand and I cannot do otherwise. God help me. Amen.” These, as the popular tradition purports, are the words the Augustinian monk Martin Luther said on the Diet of Worms in 1521 before emperor Charles V, refusing to recant his writings. Today his words are inscribed in the world’s largest Reformation memorial. This memorial, created in 1868, is like a theatre staging the antecedents, the story, and the ramifications of the Reformation.
